Age: 35
Birth Date: February 4th, 1961

personally...
Strengths: Intelligent, strong sense of duty and obligation, deceptive, cunning.
Weaknesses: Passive, impressionable, sensitive, lacking in self-confidence, strong desire to please, cowardly.
Overall Personality: Regulus Black has always been considered loyal and dutiful, willing to discomfort himself as long as it means living life the "right" way - at least the way his family considered "right." Willing to put his own desires aside for propriety and the family name, Regulus was always considered a very good child. Most of those characteristics, however, stemmed from Regulus' fear of turbulence, and the desire to get through life unscathed and accepted by peers and family alike.

Though very intelligent and very capable when it comes to magic, Regulus has always been lacking in self-confidence, and therefore has been susceptible to guilt and those who are stronger than he is, such as Tom Riddle. Nevertheless, Regulus has much of the Slytherin cunning and deception, and has employed them when necessary.

Regulus does have a temper, but he rarely takes action with it, and is more passive-aggressive than explosive. He can be sensitive, though he does his best to hide that characteristic.

More than anything, Regulus wants peace and anonymity.

what's in the past?
Give a brief explanation of how this character is different than in canon:
This Regulus has outlived the Regulus of canon, and has never embarked on a search to find the horcruxes. Rather, at the age of 20 he faked his own death, and began operating as an underground member of the Order. Very few know he is still alive, and he spends his time living in relative anonymity with underground Muggles, embarking on the occasional mission from the Order. I see this Regulus as never fully outgrowing his passivity and fear of disobeying his superiors - after all, instead of trying to make a stand, he chose to go underground and live quietly.

Overall History: Regulus was born to Walburga and Orion Black in 1961. Compared to Sirius, Regulus was always considered to be the easygoing child. Even in infancy, he was quiet, crying only when necessary, and often sleeping through most of the night. Walburga doted on him, taking to calling him her "little prince," worthy of being the heir - unlike Sirius. Though Regulus grew up accepting any and all praise and doting - being quite spoiled as a result - he found all the attention to be stifling. Though he loved his mother, he was also quite frightened of her, finding her rages dangerous, and so he learned quickly, at a very young age, that the best way to get through life unscathed was to obey, dutifully and quietly. He tried many times to impart this lesson to his brother, but Sirius didn't seem as intimidated as Regulus was, and if Regulus were to venture a guess, he'd have said that Sirius enjoyed negative attention.

Whereas Regulus wanted to avoid confrontation with his mother, he truly desired praise and affection from his father. The man, always an enigma to Regulus, was often quiet and only rarely gave a word of praise. Regulus would spend many of his childhood hours sitting in his father's library, reading, hoping that he would be praised for being so diligent in his studies. Once again, Sirius didn't seem to understand Regulus - he certainly didn't care enough to seek out his father's praise - and the two brothers often bickered. Nevertheless, Regulus cared for Sirius as much as he did his parents, and often tried to keep the peace by ending arguments with an apology, even if he had done nothing wrong.

Regulus took Sirius' sorting pretty hard. He knew that being a Gryffindor would do nothing but solidify the rift between his brother and his parents. Regulus was forced to endure conversations regarding the possibility of disinheriting Sirius. It seemed that even while Sirius was away at school, the house was in an uproar about his behavior. It made Regulus want to escape. Luckily, his own Hogwarts acceptance gave him the outlet he needed. Fearful of his sorting, he begged the Hat to give him to Slytherin. Luckily, it did just that, and while his parents were proud (not to mention relieved), Sirius was not. Their respective houses made the two brothers into automatic rivals, and Regulus learned that the best way to make friends in Slytherin was to run with what Sirius often told him was the "wrong crowd." Eventually, Sirius and Regulus stopped talking, and Regulus focused on his grades and his relationships with his fellow Slytherins.

Tom Riddle took over the Ministry in Regulus' second year of school, and his political move would eventually have great influence over impressionable Regulus. Before Tom Riddle fully took over, however, Regulus' father died, leaving the boy extremely distraught. His grades slipped and he began to withdraw. Sirius stepped in and offered a comfort Regulus had not expected, and for a while, the two boys managed something of a relationship again. However, once Regulus was able to accept his father's death, he also accepted responsibility for the Black family name. It was obvious that Sirius would not be a responsible heir, and so Regulus realized it was his responsibility to uphold the honor of the great House of Black. He therefore worked harder on maintaining a reputation within his circle of friends, and once again shut Sirius out.

As his friends and family members began to discuss how much Riddle benefited the Wizarding world and the amazing changes he was putting into motion, Regulus realized his ticket to acceptance from peers and family alike resided in support of Tom Riddle. Regulus did his best to get himself noticed by Riddle and his employees. This wasn't a difficult task, as he was a Black, and he had familial ties to the Ministry. These were the tickets that earned him a Dark Mark while still at Hogwarts - in his sixth year, shortly after his mother was declared criminally insane.

Regulus was troubled by the permanent hospitalization with his mother. Not only did he love her - even if that love was mingled with fear - her hospitalization made Sirius heir, and that could have tarnished Regulus' reputation. Luckily, all the work he had put into appeasing his Slytherin comrades and his extended family members came in handy, for rather than looked down upon, Regulus was actually view with some respect for overcoming any influence Sirius may have had upon him.

After graduating, Regulus began working in the Ministry. His excellent track record, coupled with his increasing responsibility as a Death Eater, led to a swift promotion to Junior Undersecretary. Tom Riddle also began sending him on increasingly dangerous missions, which made Regulus increasingly anxious. The closer he got to the "real" action, the real doings of Tom Riddle and the Death Eaters, the more Regulus came to realize that he was on a very wrong path. Distraught and feeling very lost, he embarked on a mission that led him murder of a Muggleborn and her family. Sickened by what he had done, Regulus went on one last mission as a Death Eater. This time, he didn't defend himself against his targets, hoping for a swift Death. The Muggleborn didn't kill Regulus; instead, he was stunned, finding himself alone when he awoke hours later. Realizing this was a chance at a new life, Regulus disappeared. It was 1980.

After a couple of years of merely running from place to place, and escaping to other, more neutral countries, Regulus decided to make himself useful. He returned to England and began to work underground for the Order, receiving missions directly from Dumbledore at first, only occasionally meeting with other, select Order members. He took on the alias "Rab" and found that he had come to like his new life. It was mostly peaceful, with the exception of the burning of his Dark Mark, which was frequent, painful and unsettling. Regulus has become paranoid as a result of the burning, believing that there must be a possibility that Tom Riddle knows he's alive. He has tried, unsuccessfully, to remove the Mark.

Being under the radar is much more suiting to Regulus' personality, as he has never been one for confrontation or blatant defiance. As long as he can remain "dead," he feels as though he can live out the rest of his days in relative peace, the Mark being the only exception. If word gets out that he is alive, however, Regulus is unsure of what he will do, especially if it means having to face the family members that mourned his death. He has considered the possibility of seeking out Sirius, but Sirius' in-your-face attitude toward the political giants have left him apprehensive. Regulus believes it is safest for himself and his brother if he remains in hiding - dead to the world.
